"Iris" is a song past American culling stone band Goo Goo Dolls. Originally written for the soundtrack of the 1998 motion-picture show City of Angels, the vocal was later included on the band's sixth album, Dizzy Upwards the Girl. The vocal was released as a single on April one, 1998.
"Iris" has contributed greatly to the band's success. The song reached number i in Australia, Canada and Italy, number iii in the United Kingdom, number nine on the Us Billboard Hot 100, and has become one of Ireland'southward best-selling singles of all fourth dimension. "Iris" is the Goo Goo Dolls' signature song and has received critical acclaim, existence described as an "ubiquitous" staple for the band'south live sets.[five] [six]

After completing the first-edit on the flick City of Angels, co-producer Bob Cavallo and his music producer son Rob Cavallo decided to take along musical artists to a viewing to create the soundtrack. Bob took Alanis Morissette whilst Rob took the Goo Goo Dolls. The post-obit morning Morissette chosen Rob, and asked him to produce the song "Uninvited" which she had written afterwards as a demo. Before long afterwards that aforementioned day, John Rzeznik called Rob with a vocal he had written chosen "Iris", a power ballad.[7] In a 2013 interview with Songfacts, lead singer Rzeznik explained how he wrote the vocal:
"I was thinking about the situation of the Nicolas Muzzle character in the picture. This guy is completely willing to give upwardly his own immortality, just to be able to feel something very human. And I think, 'Wow! What an amazing thing it must be similar to love someone then much that you surrender everything to be with them.' That's a pretty heavy idea."[8]
Rzeznik named the song afterwards land folk singer-songwriter Iris Bewilder, after he noticed her name in a concert list in the LA Weekly newspaper.[nine]
Commercial performance [edit]
Upon its release, "Iris" became second of a cord of hits from the moving picture's soundtrack, City of Angels: Music from the Motion Moving picture. (The first was Alanis Morissette'due south "Uninvited" and the third was Sarah McLachlan'south "Angel"). The song debuted at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart on April 18, 1998, and somewhen spent a record of 18 weeks at number ane in Hot 100 Airplay. Withal it was not immune to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 because no commercial unmarried had been released. In Dec 1998, just later on the vocal'south airplay had peaked, the rules inverse to allow airplay-only songs onto the chart. "Iris" was also an international hit. It peaked at number v on the Irish Singles Chart and has since go the 19th biggest-selling unmarried of all time in Ireland.[11] The song initially peaked at number fifty in the United Kingdom in Baronial 1998 before rise to number 26 the following year. On October 2, 2011, later performances past auditionees on The 10 Cistron, the vocal re-entered the UK Singles Chart at number three. In May 2013, the vocal charted at number 12 after information technology was covered by Britain'south Got Talent contestant Robbie Kennedy.[12] Elsewhere, the song became a number-ane hit in Italy (for two weeks), Australia (for five weeks), and Canada (for eight weeks), and it reached the top 10 in Flanders and the netherlands.

Besides the vocal'due south success on the charts, "Iris" enjoyed critical acclamation. At the 41st Grammy Awards, "Iris" received nominations for "Record of the Year" and "Popular Operation by a Duo or Group." The song also garnered Johnny Rzeznik a "Song of the Year" nomination.[13] The single was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Manufacture Clan of America on Feb 28, 2018. The vocal was ranked at number 39 on Rolling Stone 'southward list of the 100 greatest pop songs.[14]
In Oct 2012, "Iris" was ranked number one on Billboard 's "Top 100 Pop Songs 1992–2012" chart, which ranked the top songs of the first 20 years of the Mainstream Peak forty/Popular Songs chart. The list also featured the Goo Goo Dolls' hits "Slide", ranking at number 9, and "Name" at number 24. The Goo Goo Dolls are the merely musicians to take three songs on the list, two breaking the peak 10 and all three falling inside the top 25. They are also the simply musicians that take back to back singles (Iris, 1998 and Slide, 1999) featured on the list.[15] In a revised list in October 2017, "Iris" still ranked in the summit 10, at number eight.[16]
